Introduction
This article will guide you through the process of using a FileVault Recovery Key to reset the password used to log into your Mac (the local account password). Follow the steps below if you have forgotten your password or if your current password is not working.
To find out how to request your recovery key, click here: Requesting FileVault 2 Recovery Keys for datajar.mobi
Before you begin
Please ensure you are entering your password correctly. If your password contains symbols, double-check that the correct keyboard layout is selected by clicking the keyboard button in the top-right corner of the login window.
If your password is still not working, please follow the steps below:
Choose a reset option from the login window
To see the options of how to reset your password, select the question mark next to the password field in the login window. If you can't see a question mark, please enter any password three times.
- Click the option to restart and show password reset options, then wait for your Mac to restart.
- You'll then be asked to enter your FileVault recovery key. You will have received it from a support engineer at dataJAR via the support ticket raised earlier.
- Select a user you want to reset the password for (usually your work or school username), then click Next.
- Enter your new password information, then click Next.
- When the password reset process has been completed, click Restart.
If you see the option to reset using your recovery key:
- Click the option to reset using your recovery key, then enter your FileVault recovery key. You'll have received it when you turned on FileVault and chose to create a recovery key instead of allowing your iCloud account (Apple ID) to unlock your disk.
- Enter your new password information, then click Reset Password.
If you use Jamf Connect
Jamf Connect is a solution that links your school or work account password to your local Mac’s password, so you can log into the Mac with the same password you use to access other services in your organisation.
If you have reset your local Mac password with a recovery key and it is now different from your school or work account password, Jamf Connect will help you change the local password on your Mac to match your school or work account password. Depending on how your organisation has set up Jamf Connect, you may be asked to enter your school or work account username and password before you can log back in, or you may be able to log back in and be prompted to sign into your work and school account in a pop-up window.
If you do not see your desktop after resetting your local Mac password and instead see your organisation’s login page:
- Log into the Mac with your work or school account details.
- You may be prompted to enter your local Mac password (this will be what you changed it to during the reset with the recovery key earlier). Enter this here.
- Your local Mac password will be changed to match your work or school account password. Use your work or school account password to log into your Mac from now on.
If you do see your desktop after resetting your local Mac password and see a pop-up window asking you to sign in with your work or school account:
- Sign into the pop-up window with your work or school account details.
- You may be prompted to enter your local Mac password (this will be what you changed it to during the reset with the recovery key earlier). Enter this here.
- Your local Mac password will be changed to match your work or school account password. Use your work or school account password to log into your Mac from now on.
